Hilda Lea Malcolm

Hilda Lea Malcolm, age 91, of Philippi, West Virginia, passed away peacefully at Mansfield Place, surrounded by care and love on Tuesday December 16, 2025

Hilda was born on August 1, 1934, in Philippi, a daughter of the late Earl Frey and Addie (Shaffer) Frey. She spent her entire life rooted in the community she loved. On August 30, 1953, she was united in marriage to the love of her life, Wendall O. Malcolm. Together they shared many wonderful years of marriage until his passing on July 29, 2007.

Hilda devoted her working years to Barbour County Schools, retiring as a teacher’s aide. She took great pride in helping children and supporting teachers, and she was remembered for her kindness, patience, and quiet dedication. Her faith was an important part of her life, and she was a longtime member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter #41, and the Retired School Teachers Association.

Above all else, Hilda cherished her family. She loved spending time with those closest to her and created many special memories through simple joys. She was an animal lover, especially fond of dogs, and she and her husband enjoyed years of camping and fishing together—time spent outdoors that brought her great happiness.

Hilda is survived by her loving daughter, Cheryl Bowers and husband Bill; her granddaughter, Jordan Bowers; step-grandchildren, Chris Bowers and Wendy (Bowers) Moats and husband Ronnie; sisters-in-law, Jo Ellen McDaniel and RoAnn Martin; and several nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss her deeply.

In addition to her parents and beloved husband, Hilda was preceded in death by her son, Wayne Oris Malcolm; brothers, William Frey and Don Frey; sister, Geraldine (Frey) Sutton; and sister-in-law, Norma (Malcolm) Martin.

Family and friends will be received at Wright Funeral Home and On-Site Crematory, 220 N. Walnut Street, Philippi, on Saturday, December 20, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Jim Strawderman officiating.

Hilda will be laid to rest beside her husband at Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery, where they will be reunited once again.
