Resided in: Philippi, West Virginia

Alice Lorraine Murphy Dickenson

Passed away peacefully, with her husband and daughter by her side, on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.

She was born the middle daughter of the late Woodrow William Murphy and the late Rotha Boyles Murphy on May 12, 1944.

Alice married Tommy L. Dickenson, son of the late Ford and Vera Dickenson, on April 10, 1965. In 2025, Alice and Tom celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary, an occasion they were very proud of achieving.

She was the mother of one daughter, Tonya Leigh Baker, and a son-in-law she loved as her own, Jason Baker. She also had one beloved grandson and granddaughter-in-law which she adored, Jakob and Anna Marie Baker. She is also survived by a younger sister, Patty Sue Bowmar and her husband John Bowmar, brother and sister-in-laws and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding Alice in death were two infant sons, William and Timothy, her older sister Wilma Jean Freeman and her late husband Edgar Freeman, a nephew J.C. Bowmar, a special uncle, Hobert Boyles, who was like a second father to her, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Alice worked for several years as a receptionist at the old Broaddus Hospital and later for 26 years as a service personnel and teacher’s assistant in the Barbour County School System. The stories she told of her time as a kindergarten aide were full of smiles and laughter. She loved the people she worked with and the students and families she served.

Alice enjoyed a quiet retirement at her home in Tacy. She enjoyed family get togethers, shopping trips with her daughter, mystery shows, reading, jigsaw puzzles and sitting on her deck in the warm weather. She will be missed beyond measure by those who loved her.

The family would like to thank Mountain Hospice and the Mountain Living Community Assisted Care for their guidance, compassion and care.

Family will receive family and friends at Wright Funeral Home and on-site Crematory 220 N. Walnut St. Philippi on Friday March 6, from 11 am- 2 pm. Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel at 2 pm with Pastor Cindy Morgan Roberts officiating.Β  Alice will be laid to rest in the Crossroads Cemetery.

  4. Tommy, I am so sorry for your loss. I did not know your wife, but I knew you through the Philippi Post Office. I worked at the Department of Environmental Protection on 3rd floor when you were at the post office on 1st floor of the professional building along the river. You were always very nice and cared about helping others that came through your line at the post office. I am sure you have wonderful memories of your wife and that you will always carry her in your heart.
    Sincerely, Dian Mitchell (now Seckman)
