Gary D. McCauley, 78, a resident of Philippi, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Saturday, April 11, 2026.
He was born on September 6, 1947, in Philippi, a son of the late Delbert Simon McCauley and Edna Mae (Mitchell) McCauley.
Gary was united in marriage on June 25, 1966, to Patricia “Pat” G. (Morrison) McCauley, who survives.
Gary served as President of the Sentinel Mines before his retirement. After his retirement from the mines Gary worked for Blackheart International. He proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1966 to 1968 during the Vietnam Conflict. In Gary’s earlier years he attended and competed in several rodeos riding bulls. He had a great love for horses and raised many over the years. Gary was a hardworking man who lived a life centered around family, the outdoors, and helping others. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming, spending time at the cabin, and taking side-by-side rides. Gary had his own sawmill that he enjoyed operating very much. He loved being outdoors and especially cherished time spent with his grandchildren. Gary was always busy—whether fixing things for his family or lending a hand to anyone in need.
He was a member of the National Rifle Association and a graduate of the School of Hard Knocks.
In addition to his wife, Gary is survived by his children, Teresa McCauley Kennedy and husband David, and Jeff McCauley and wife Julie; his beloved grandchildren, Sawyer and Wyatt McCauley; his brother, Randall McCauley and wife Judy; as well as a several nieces and nephews; and his loyal K-9 companions, Jake and Monroe.
