Richard Gary Mitchell

Richard “Dick” Gary Mitchell, age 87, of Philippi, WV, passed away on July 12, 2026. He was born on July 8, 1939, a son of the late Okey James Mitchell and Iva Marie (Day) Mitchell.

Richard was a devoted family man who cherished the time spent with his loved ones. He is survived by his children, Gary Mitchell and wife Mahala, Larry Mitchell, Lisa Landers, and Eric Mitchell. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Brandon Mitchell, Ryan Mitchell, Kayla Mitchell, Tiffany Witek, Parker Mitchell, Maggie Mitchell, Jeremy Hunt, Travis Mitchell, Brian Newberry, Amber Newberry, Devan Newberry, Jessica Landers, and Jacob Landers; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his loving wife, June Mitchell; daughter, Sharon Hunt; granddaughter, Ashley N. Hunt; grandson, Darien S. Hunt; siblings. Kurtis Mitchell, Fred Mitchell, Imogene Hathaway; and LuBelle Digman.

Richard dedicated many years of his life as a truck driver for Southern States. He was a hardworking man who took great pride in his work and in caring for the things he owned. He was known for the immaculate care he gave his possessions, especially his truck, which was a great source of pride.

An avid outdoorsman, Richard enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and operating equipment. In his younger years, he enjoyed racing motorcycles and collected horse-drawn farm equipment and displayed at his residence for everyone to enjoy.  He also enjoyed attending bluegrass festivals in Parsons and Summersville, where he appreciated the music and fellowship.

Richard will be remembered for his strong work ethic, love of the outdoors, attention to detail, and the memories he created with his family and friends. He leaves behind a legacy of dedication, perseverance, and a life well lived.

Richard’s family will cherish the many memories shared with him and the impact he had on their lives.

Family will receive friends at the Wright Funeral Home and on-site Crematory 220 N. Walnut St. Philippi, on Thursday July 16, from 5-8:00 pm and on Friday July 17, from 8am-12 pm.  Funeral services will be held at 12:00 pm. Richard will be laid to rest in the Clemtown Cemetery.
