Sharlot Ann (Croston) Carper, age 71, a resident of Alder Lane, Philippi, gained her wings after a brief battle with illness on Thursday, October 15, 2026, at home, surrounded by family.
She was born on April 24, 1955, in Philippi, a daughter of the late Elihu Burl Croston and the late Irene (Miner) Croston. She was united in marriage in the summer of 2007 to Jack Carper, who survives. Also surviving is her daughter, Patricia Pifer and best friend Lori Soo, of Philippi; sister Arlina McCartney and husband Troy; nephew Randall McCartney and wife Heather; grand-niece Dominica McCartney and fiancé Chad Miller; grand-nephew Raven McCartney and wife Latoya; grand-nephew Nevin McCartney and significant other Erin Corley; grand-niece Estellena McCartney; grand-niece Cadance McCartney; great grand-niece Paislee McCartney; great great-nephew Shelton Miller, great great-nephew Jeremy Miller, great great-nephew Dawson Miller; stepson Jack Pifer II and fiancé Helen Feather; Step grandson Takoda Wilcher; as well as many cousins and friends.
Mama Charlot was also preceded in death by her grandparents Dellet and Bessie (Newman) Croston, and Marion “Frank” and Masalona (Croston) Miner, as well as aunt Helen (Miner) Croston; nephew Troy Lee McCartney, Jr.
She retired from Sodexo and spent a lifetime in service to others in her community. Sharlot enjoyed going to church babysitting, singing, reading her Bible, tending to her flowers, going to picnics, sightseeing, and spending time with her family. She was a member of the Apostolic Olive Hill Church and loved her church family dearly.
Friend will be welcomed at the Wright Funeral Home and on-site Crematory 220 N. Walnut St. Philippi on Monday October 19, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm and again on Tuesday October 20, from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 pm with Rev. Dolly Sparks and Lennie Minard, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the Croston-McCartney Cemetery. Following the interment a meal will be provided at the Nestorville Community Building.

I am so sorry to hear of Sharlots passing. I attended school with her at Philippi Jr High and Philip Barbour. She was a very special friend whom I had a lot of classses with. I left the Philippi area and lived in Charleston for 30 years.. I returned to Philippi in 2006 and was privileged to run into Sharlot a few times and exchanged phone numbers. We intended on meeting for lunch and catching up and reminiscing about the good old days. I am saddened that I waited to long to call her. I thought many times about looking for her number but got sidetracked. I will always regret this. I send my sympathy and want you to know she was a wonderful person and friend and I will always cherish her friendship that was one of Gods greatest blessings. Rest in peace near friend. I will meet you at the pearly gate.
