Ruth Elizabeth (Powell) Brockwell age 89 a resident of Rt. 4 Meadow Heights Philippi passed away on Friday June 29, 2012 while a resident of Mansfield Place of Broaddus Hospital. Mrs. Brockwell was the last surviving member of 12 siblings and was born on July 18, 1922 in Pipe Creek, Belmont County, Ohio, a daughter of William and Eunice (Saffell) Powell of Pipe Creek, Shadyside, Ohio. She was united in marriage on July 6, 1960 to her husband of 53 years, James A. Brockwell, Jr. who survives. Also surviving

As a teenager, Ruth cleaned houses and worked in a bakery, making pies. On laundry day it was said that the linens hanging on her clothes line were the cleanest in the neighborhood. At one time, Ruth managed the Wigwam Restaurant in Powhatan Point, OH. It was here that she met her husband Jim Brockwell. Recently graduated from VPI, Jim was employed by North American Coal Corp. in Powhatan Point and ate at the Wigwam. Ruth loved flowers and for a while belonged to the Philippi Garden Club.
Ruth's request for cremation will be honored.
