Joseph Lee “Joe” Gouer age 89 a resident of Philippi departed this life on July 13, 2016 at his residence with his loving wife by his side. He was born on September 23, 1926 in Mansfield, a son of the late Hobart and Reba (Queen) Gouer.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Beverly J. (Mitchell) Gouer who he married on January 16, 1654. Also surviving one son, Larry Joe Gouer and companion Robin Delaney of Elkins; son-in-law, Robert Ball of Philippi; three granddaughters, Jennifer Gouer Pritt, Denise Fletcher and husband Levi and Christina Maddy all of Elkins. Also surviving are seven great-grandchildren; Lily, Laney, Lexi, Kayden, Layla, Carter and Lincoln; one sister, Betty Thrasher and one brother Robert Gouer and wife Eleanor, one sister-in-law, Elwanda Gourer and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Susan Gouer Ball, brothers; Hobart Jr., and Charles Eugene; sisters, Ellaween, Helen, Josaphine and Joann.
Joe attended Mansfield Grade School and graduated from Philippi High School with the Class of 1945. He attended the Mansfield U.M. Church and Arden U.M. Church.
He served in the U.S. Navy in WWII and was honorably discharged in 1946.
He was a retired electrician and route manager for Gerard and Stevens Amusement Company.
He was the president of City Appliance Company along with his wife Beverly, brother Eugene and son Larry. He was also the president of Davis Drug Store and a lifetime member of the VFW and American Legion Post 44.
Joe was a loving father, husband, grandfather, and great-grandfather; and he dedicated his life to family and friends. He will always be remembered as “Joe the Pinball Man” for his many years in the coin machine business. Joe enjoyed hunting, playing cards, trading guns and collecting coins. Joe also enjoyed spending time working and developing Little Laurel Farm.
Joe never met a stranger and could always put a smile on your face. Joe will be missed by all that knew him.
Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home 220 N. Walnut St. Philippi on Monday, July 18th from 5-8 pm and on Tuesday, July 19th from 8am-1pm the service hour with Pastor John Villers officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery with military honors be accorded.
