Charles R. McDaniel, age 85 of Wellington Heights, Philippi passed away Friday January 12,2018 at his residence. He was born on December 22, 1932 in Barbour County a son of the late Floyd and Delphia (Phillips) McDaniel. On October 21, 1953 he was united in marriage to JoEllen (Malcolm) McDaniel who survives in Wellington Heights, Philippi. Charles and Jo Ellen were married in Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church, where Charles was a member for most of his life, and held numerous positions within the church over the years including superintendent for many years.

A sister, Rosemary Maxwell and husband Sam Maxwell of McSherrystown, PA.
Sister in law, Hilda (Frey) Malcolm of Philippi, and brother in law, James Martin of Hurricane, WV
A son, Tim McDaniel and wife, Judy (Crawford) McDaniel of Tacy.
A son, Eric McDaniel and wife, Amanda (Abeel) McDaniel of Chantilly, VA.
Five grandchildren, Adam McDaniel and wife, Amanda (Stoner) of Philippi, Ryan McDaniel of Morgantown, Isaac, Jacob, and Elizabeth McDaniel all of Chantilly, VA
Three great-grandchildren, Avery, Payton, and Landon McDaniel all of Philippi
He was preceded in death by three brothers Burl McDaniel of Carrollton, OH, Carl L. McDaniel Sr. of Grafton, Robert McDaniel of Philippi, and a sister Gladys Paxton of Canton, OH.
Charles served in the US Army’s 101st Airborne Division and was recognized as an Outstanding Trainee in Basic Training. He served in the 3rd Infantry Division in Korea as a Squad Leader, and later in the 8097th Engineering Division reaching rank of Sergeant of Guard. He was honorably discharged in 1955.
Charles was a retired coal miner from Badger Coal Company. He was a member of the Philippi Lions Club, an avid and well known gardener, and enjoyed spending time with his family and his dog, Daisy.
The family extends special thanks to Mountain Hospice.
Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home 220 N. Walnut St. Philippi on Sunday, January 14th from 5-8pm and on Monday, January 15th from 8-11am the service hour with Rev. Dr. Robert Sisler officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery with military honors being accorded.
