Sylvia was my Home Economics teacher in 1958 and 1959 at Philippi High School. She taught me to sew and to cook. She also complained because I smoked during my lunch hour and came to her class “reeking”. She was a great teacher and I still remember some of her teachings to this day – 60+ years later.
Even though I did not have Sylvia as a teacher, I have always admired her and her wit.
I will miss talking with her about history and glassware.
RIP and so glad she got to her 100th birthday.

I’m praying for comfort and peace for you all. Aunt Sylvia was a dear friend and neighbor of my grandmother’s. I have good memories of spending time in my grandmother’s kitchen with the two of them. She will be missed. With love, Whitney Cochran Westrich
I was saddened to hear of your loss. Your mother will lovingly be remembered by her former students, family, and community.
My deepest sympathies to all of Sylvia’s family. I have so many fond memories of her, from the time I was 5 years old. She was such a fierce & special lady.
Sylvia Marley was my teacher, my teaching colleague, and a friend. I believe Mrs. Markley was the last surviving faculty member from the first year Philip Barbour High School opened for the 1963-64 school year. The sewing, cooking, and homemaking skills I learned from Mrs. Marley, Mrs. Kittle, my mother and my mother-in-law were as important as anything else I learned in life.. Thank you, Mrs.Marley.
“Rest in Heavenly Peace Sylvia.”. My Condolence to her daughter and other family members . GOD Blessed her with a long life. <3
Mrs. Markley was a most powerful influence in my life as I to majored in Home Economics at WVU because of her! When I was around 10 years old (riding my bike around her home) she came out to me and invited me to visit her Civil War bedroom. I was amazed that she took the time to tell me about her family and their involvement in the Civil War. After that I became a most avid “History Buff”. Will miss her! RIP
