Caroline Sue [Hildreth] Shaw passed away on Monday, July 15, 2024, at her secondary residence, Mansfield Place in Philippi. She was born on February 7, 1933, in Parkersburg, WV. She was the daughter of the late Charles Hildreth and Margaret [Sisler] Hildreth-Jennings. At 16, Caroline married Wilford Leo Shaw, who survives, on November 5, 1949, in Oakland, MD. Their good friends Bob and “Billie” Moore of Thornton traveled with them to serve as best man and bridesmaid at their wedding. Caroline and Leo were looking forward to being able to brag about being married 75 years this fall. Caroline is also survived by her daughter, Gloria Wentz; granddaughters, Sheree Wentz, Stephanie [Lantz] Foltz and husband Bobby; great-grandchildren, Hayley Riffle and husband Brandon, Logan Foltz; and great-great-grandson, Rip Riffle. At 91, she was naturally preceded in death by most of her immediate family, but most recently by her son-in-law, Glenn Wentz Jr.; and oldest daughter, Sylvia Ellen Lantz and husband, Larry. She would also be sad if her best friends who preceded her in death were not mentioned: Pauline Hudkins, Geraldine Rogers, and Anna Rose Bowers. Caroline graduated from Grafton High School, was a homemaker until her daughters were grown, then went to work at the Barbour Department Store. She was a faithful poll worker at the Brushy Fork School/Community Building. She was the last known member of the Shooks Run Homemakers Club, where she held different offices throughout the years. Upon retirement, she and Leo went on several bus trips, and she traveled with the homemakers to Hawaii. She loved to crochet, quilt, watch Elvis, listen to Randy Travis, and root for her favorite ball teams. Caroline and Leo lived at 1428 Stewarts Run Road since the mid-1950s until recently when they both became residents together in the same room at Mansfield Place. They still considered Stewarts Run their permanent home. The family cat, “Kitty Baby,” still looks for Caroline every day. She will be sadly missed—until we see and are with her again.
Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home and on-site Crematory 220 N. Walnut St. Philippi on Friday July 19, from 10-12 pm. Funeral services will be conducted at 12pm with Pastor Tami Toothman-Shoup officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery.
