In Loving Memory of Carol Sue Landis
Carol Sue Landis, 59, passed away peacefully at home on the evening of March 18, 2025. Born on August 13, 1965, in Upshur County, Carol lived a life filled with love, kindness, and a deep passion for helping others.
A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend, Carol touched countless lives with her warmth and generosity. As a dedicated CNA, she spent many years caring for those in need, leaving a lasting impact on the hearts of so many. Whether she was tending to her beloved garden, canning the fruits of her labor, camping under the stars, or casting a fishing line into the water, Carol found joy in the simple, beautiful moments of life.
Carol’s greatest love was her family. She is survived by her devoted husband, Matthew Anthony "Tony" Landis, with whom she shared a lifetime of love and laughter. She leaves behind her cherished son, Mark Landis, and his wife, Tarana Landis, as well as her two precious grandchildren, Savannah and Molly Landis, who brought her endless joy. She is also survived by her loving mother, Maretta Phillips, and her brother, James Michael "Mike" Phillips, and his wife, Mary Phillips.
Carol’s heart was big enough to welcome not only her immediate family but also her four adopted sisters, Anna Perkins (Doug), Nicole Reed (Bradley), Alysha Phillips (Matthew Stanton), and Jamie Phillips (Donovan Garcia), as well as three adopted brothers, Joshua, Justin, and Larry Phillips. She also leaves behind her dear aunts, Patty Umble (Bill) and Mary Marks (Delmas), and Uncle Johnny, along with her sister-in-law, Mary Jane Lipps.
Among the many who will miss her dearly are her best friends, Patty Wamsley, Gary Wayne Umble, and Mary Riley that Carol considered like a sister, as well as family friend Danielle Lynn Quincel-McCarty. Carol was blessed with a large extended family of nieces, great-nieces, nephews, great-nephews, and cousins, all of whom she loved deeply, including Chris, Angel, Jemerald, Sheila, Nina Mae, Rodger, Julie, Eddie, John-John, Tammy, Bobby, William, Greg, Brandon, Jacinda, Collen, Megan, Billy, Joyce, Hannah, Elizabeth, Brenna, Brittany, Tiffany, Destiny, Ethan, Cyrus, Gunner, Zendrick, Scarlett, Aubriella, William, Lucian, Xander, and Christopher James, as well as Mercury.
Her love extended even to her beloved furbabies, Chewy and Jinx, who were her faithful companions.
Carol was preceded in death by her father, James Guy "Jim" Phillips, her grandparents, Frank and Nina Keene, her Aunt Betty Baisi, her cousins Pamela "Pam" Johnston and Jake, her Uncle Tex, and her dear canine companion, Spunky.
Carol had a way of making everyone feel like family. She made friends everywhere she went, and her kindness, laughter, and unwavering love will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Though our hearts are heavy with loss, we find comfort in the memories she left behind and the love she so freely gave. Carol’s legacy will live on in the gardens she nurtured, the lives she touched, and the family she adored.
A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Carol’s giving spirit by extending kindness to others, just as she did every day of her life.
"Those we love never truly leave us. They live on in the kindness they shared and the love they gave."
