Carl "Junior" Winans
February 23, 1925 ~ March 3, 2025
Carl “Junior” Winans, age 100, a resident of Carrolton Community passed away Monday March 3, 2025, at the Tygart Valley Health and Rehabilitation in Belington. He was born February 23, 1925, at home in the Carrolton Community, the son of the late Emmett Burton and Maggie (Mitchell) Winans. Carl was united in marriage on September 10, 1954, in Baltimore, Maryland to Agnes Marie (Hunt) Winans who survives at their home.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Shell (Jim) of Ellicott City, MD, Ann Marie Baldwin (Edward) of Carrolton Community, one son Gary Lynn Winans (Debbie) of Belington, WV, four grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Carl retired from Bethlehem Steel Sparrows Point Plant in Dundalk, MD after 39 years.
He was a member of Patapsco Masonic Lodge # 183 AF and AM of Dundalk, Maryland. Carl was Methodist in Faith and a member of Graceland United Methodist Church in Baltimore for over 60 years. He enjoyed traveling, hunting and gardening.
In addition to his parents Carl was preceded in death by six brothers Charles, Coleman, Delbert, Clinton, Homer, Virgil; two sisters Georgia Smith and Goldie Richards, Carl was the last surviving member of his family.
Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home and on-site Crematory 220 N. Walnut St. Philippi on Friday March 7, from 1- 2 pm. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 pm with Pastor Johnnie Williams officiating. Interment will follow in the Hunt Memorial Cemetery with the Bigelow Lodge # 52 AF and AM conducting graveside rites.

Carl and I were fast friends when we first met and I was amazed at his remarkable memory for local history whieh he and I shared a love for. I was thinking at his 100th birthday party that he had been witness to momentous changes in our country…the Depression, WWII, Korea and Vietnam, and helping build this country one steel girder at a time with his almost 40 years at Sparrows Point where coincidently my great-grandfather had also worked during WWII. He gave me such an insight to the place that it was and brought it alive for me. He always greeted me with a smile and was happy to see me when I visited. I will miss him, but he has left me his sweet wife Agnes, whom I adore, to enjoy many more hours of friendship. A life well lived, Carl!

I am so sorry for the family’s loss I had the privilege of loving “popaw carl” while employed at MLC he was the sweetest soul my fav resident he was such a blessing to my life if any of his family see this in Jan I purchased him some birthday gifts but didn’t get the chance to give them before he left MLC before his birthday if someone wants to reach out to me I will gladly give them to you my thoughts and prayers are with everyone to know Carl was to love him I’m blessed because I got I know him he talked of his family often always with a smile on his face
