Charles Schola

Charles “Sam” Schola, age 74, a resident of Philippi, passed away Sunday July 27, 2025 at his residence. Sam was born June 18, 1951 in Grafton, WV a son of Charles Ray “Digger” and Harriet Virginia (Young) Schola. Sam was united in marriage to Janice Lynn (Martin) Schola. Sam was a graduate of Philip Barbour Class of 1969. He worked for Barbour Coal Company as a mechanic, later he purchased Philippi Discount Tire and operated until his retirement in 2022. Sam loved working on cars, building hot rods, and drag racing at Eldora Racetrack. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and attending cars shows. Sam often liked to travel to Myrtle Beach and Aruba. He was a member of the Philippi Fire Department he was active for 25 years and currently was serving as Vice President. Surviving is son Jedd Schola and wife Misty; grandchildren Grant and Madison Schola, and Hailee Poling; brother-in-law Tony Martin. Sam was preceded in death by his parents Digger and Harriet Schola; and wife Jan Schola. A celebration of life service may be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Mikey Hart Memorial Scholarship PO Box 436 Belington, WV 26250.

  2. Jedd,Misty and all the family and friends. I’m so very sorry to hear about Sam. He was a very good guy and friend . He was always willing to help people with their vehicles when they was having problems.
    I know he had worked on alot of my vehicles and put alot of tires on my cars over the years. He was a special person and friend to everyone.
    I know he was like a brother to my brother John.

  3. Sam was the best neighbor anyone could ask for. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, a blessing in the community and so very loved. He will be greatly missed.

  4. I am so sorry to hear of Sam’s passing. Much sympathy to the family; I am sorry for your loss. Sam worked on many cars for me and my sons, and he was always fair and thorough. He will be missed.

  5. Sam and I went to school together @Berryburg Elementary. Upon on return home visits to Philippi was able to visit Sam at the tire shop and catch up with each other. Sam was a good man and will be missed by all who knew him . Sincere condolences to his family.
