Henry Roy

Henry Thomas Roy, age 85, a resident of Wellington Heights, Philippi died on January 6, 2013 at United Hospital Center. He was born in Philippi, on March 30, 1927 the son of the late Carl Thomas and Ina (Martin) Roy. Surviving is his wife of 60 years Jean (Hoy) Roy, one son John Thomas Roy and wife Julanne of Midland, Mich., and grandsons John Thomas Roy Jr. of Cedar Falls Iowa and Harrison Andrew Roy of Detroit, Michigan. He is also survived by one sister Martha Rose Roy of Philippi. He was preceded in death by his parents. Tom graduated from Philippi High School in 1944, and in 1945-46 he served in the US Navy during WWII. He served as a Seaman First Class in the South Pacific. Tom graduated from Alderson-Broaddus College with a degree in Business Administration in the class of 1949. He was employed then by the Barbour Department Store in Philippi for 46 years, serving as assistant manager, manager and co-owner. He has been a member of the Philippi Baptist and served on its Board of Trustees and other church boards. Mr. Roy was a life member, post commander, and honor guard of the American Legion Post #44, a director of the County Fair Association, a member of the Alderson-Broaddus College Basketball Boosters. He received Basketball Boosters Honors in recognition of his outstanding service to A-B Athletics. In 1988, he became a charter member of the Barbour County Chamber of Commerce. That same year he received a life service award from the newly formed chamber. In 1992, Tom was listed in Who’s Who in WV Business by the State Journal. In 2000, Tom was inducted into the Alderson-Broaddus College D.J. Willis society. In 2007, the college also presented Tom and his wife an Apollo award for service to the College and the community. Mr. Roy has been a member of the Philippi Lion’s Club for 62 years, and was the club’s longest living member. He has been a past president, secretary, and treasure of the club and he has held a number of regional and state Lion’s positions. He also served as the Guiding Lion for the Junior Lion’s Club when it was formed. In addition he was the chairman of the Philippi Lion’s Club hospital equipment distribution program, form the community. The Philippi Lion’s Club has presented him with the Melvin Jones and Leonard Jarrett awards as well as many other awards for his service. Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home 216 N. Walnut St. Philippi on Wednesday January 9 from 4-8 pm and on Thursday January 10, from 8 am -1 pm. The funeral service and committal services will be held at 1 pm in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Jon Villers officiating military honours will be accorded following the service. Entombment will be in the Bryan Memorial Mausoleum at Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Henry Thomas Roy Scholarship Fund o/c of Alderson-Broaddus College 101 College Hill Drive, Philippi, WV 26416.   8. We are sorry to read about the death of Henry Thomas Roy. I ( Bob Sayers) was at AB College from 1947 to 1950. I graduated in 32 months. Graduated between presidents so do not have my diploma signed yet. Elliott was leaving and Shearer was replacing him. We are sending our condolances.

  9. When I was a youngster in Philippi, Mr. Roy was always kind and helpful when I went to the Department Store for some shoes or a suit for the prom. As an adult I then knew and respected him as a fine citizen.
