Hershel Payne

January 6, 1925 ~ April 15, 2016

Hershel Elsa Payne also known to friends as “Red” or “Sarge”, age 91, a resident of Carrolton Rd. Volga passed away Friday April 15, 2016 in the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center. He was born January 6, 1925 in Century, a son of the late William Earl and Marie (Curkendall) Payne. He was united in marriage to Doris Lee (Stalnaker) Payne who survives at home. Also surviving 5 Children; Tim Payne and wife Jan of Volga Jill Marsh and husband Dennis of Philippi Terry Payne and wife Robin of Volga Brenda Currence and husband David of Volga Amy Mick and husband Travis of Carrolton One sister; Iris Ramsey of OH Two brothers; Bill Payne of Volga Joe Payne of Buckhannon Nine grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, one expected great-great grandchild Alexis Rose Barkus. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lorrine Cox, and Shirley Grippe, two brothers, Mason Payne and Teddy Payne, one grandson, Timothy Scott and one great grandchild David Austin Currence Mr. Payne retired as a coal miner for Reppert Coal Company in Buckhannon, he served in the US Navy during WWII from 1942-45. Mr. Payne was a member of the American Legion Post #44, VFW Post #410, he enjoyed attending yard sales selling wooden handles and tools, he was also a past counselor for AA. He was Methodist by Faith. Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home 220 N. Walnut St. Philippi on Sunday april 17, from 6-8 pm. A graveside service will be held at 12 pm on Monday April 18, at Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery with Pastor Bryan Headley officiating. Military honors will be accorded by American Legion Post # 44.

  1. So sorry for your loss. I dont know anyone who didnt like Red or didnt enjoy his stories of life. He will be sadly missed. Prayers for peace for his family.

  2. We r so sorry to hear of your loved ones passing, he was such a very nice man, and I know right now u r lost, but hang on to the memories, and stay close to God and he will bring u thru.
