Uncle I was my favorite uncle, the one Uncle I saw most, and my best friend. I always used to bring up politics because then we would talk for hours, I was the only one he wouldn’t get too mad at over saying anything political. I loved him and I always will, I hope wherever he is now that he knows and that I will forever miss him.
I briefly served with “Hoot” in the Army’s Berlin Brigade circa 1975. Then Specialist Six Hooton (equal to a Staff Sergeant) would talk about his West Virginia roots and once showed me a photo of his father.
Hoot had an important job in Berlin. He worked directly for the United States Commanding Officer, Berlin (aka USCOB), a two star Army general, MG Joseph McDonough.
Funny, I remember Hoot telling us about his trip to England or an engagement he had with the British in Berlin.
Hoot said he had to spell his first name to the person who asked: Aware of the potential discomfort a Brit might have with the spelling, Hoot said he sheepishly spelled out his first name rather slowly, “I R A.” May Ira F. Hooton rest in peace.
