Ira Lewis Bennett, 79, of Moatsville, passed away on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at the WV Caring Hospice Facility in Elkins, WV.

Born on September 17, 1946, in Philippi, he was the son of the late Richard and Kathleen (Simpson) Bennett.

 

Ira proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam conflict. Throughout his working years, he was employed as a coal miner and later as a janitor for Barbour County Schools. A true outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, shooting, and spending time in nature. He loved watching westerns, was a lifelong member of the National Rifle Association, and had a soft spot for cats. Ira was a member of Shiloh Covenant Brethren Church.

 

He is survived by his daughter, Myranda McDaniel, and her husband, Robert K. McDaniel II; and his grandchildren, Kaitlyn Poling, Mylee Poling, and Maddilyn McDaniel.

 

In addition to his parents, Ira was preceded in death by his infant son, Matthew Bennett, and his brothers, Charles Lynn Bennett and Michael Lee Bennett.

 

The family will receive friends at Wright Funeral Home and On-Site Crematory, 220 N. Walnut St., Philippi, on Saturday, December 13, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., with Pastor Todd Mouser officiating. Interment will follow in Shiloh Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by the U.S. Army and American Legion Post #96. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be to the Shiloh Children’s School 1676 South Shiloh Rd. Moatsville, WV 26405.
