Barbara Jo (Sperry) Burner, 64, of Grafton, WV, died Sunday September 9, 2018, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
Barbara was the daughter of Jody Sperry and the late C. Everett Sperry of Philippi. She graduated from Philip Barbour High School in 1972, completed a nursing degree at Parkersburg Community College, and a BSN from West Virginia University ranking in the top 5% of her class. She worked as a nurse in various locations in West Virginia, most recently at Broaddus Hospital until early this summer.
Barbara loved caring for others, including her patients, her co-workers, and her family. She loved dogs, and provided loving lodging for various dogs throughout her life. She was passionately concerned about the effects of climate change and was an advocate for stewardship of the earth. She was also a champion for social justice.
She is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, Gary Burner, and 2 sons, Adam Burner of Grafton, and Joe Burner and wife Janelle as well as granddaughter Sophia of Raleigh, North Carolina. Sophia was the sunshine of Barbara’s life, and time spent with her provided the greatest joy of Barb’s last seven years. In addition to her mother, she is survived by a brother, David and wife Gail Sperry, of Elmhurst, Illinois, and a sister, Jeannie Sperry and husband Tom Adamski, of Rochester, Minnesota as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Family will receive friends at Wrights Funeral Home, 220 N Walnut St, Philippi from 5-8 PM Wednesday September 12 and from 9-11 AM Thursday, September 13th prior to the service at 11 AM. Rev. Dwight Brohard, cousin of the deceased, will officiate. Cremation will follow after the service.
