Burl B. Jones, 85, of Century #2, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, November 23, 2013. He was born, November 3, 1928 in Moatsville, the son of the late Lena Ball and Carl T. Jones. One May 13, 1949, he married the former Ethel “Jane” Ramsey, who preceded him in death January 21, 2011.
Surviving is their daughter, Carla Jones and her husband, Steve Minnick of Century #2, Step-grandchildren are Chad Minnick of Huntington, WV and Toni Debarr of Buckhannon, his sister-in-law, Mrs. Iris (Payne) Ramsey of Astabula, Ohio. Two nieces, Mrs. Daniel (Linda) Walker and Mrs. Gary (Sandy) Paine. He has two nephews, Tom Ramsey and Steve (Alice) Ramsey all of Ohio. Also surviving is Matt Freeman and family of Philippi, WV
He was also preceded in death by his step-father, “Ding” Wright and his step-mother, Mary Jones; his uncles, Mr. Rasty (Mae) Ball and Clarence (Mildred) Ball, Mr. Paul (Elizabeth) Jones and Mr. Ralph (Icie) Jones. Aunts who have preceded Burl, include Mrs. Lois (John) Poe, Mrs. Nell (Karl) Maxson and Ms. Alma Jones. His brother-in-law, Mr. Junior Ramsey, cousin Paul David Jones and best friend, Andy Kurucz.
Mr. Jones attended Barbour County Schools, worked for the B&O Railroad, and then served in the U.S. Army from 1945-1948. He owned and operated several businesses in both Los Angeles, CA and then in West Virginia, upon returning home in 1967. Being a welder, fabricator, truck owner and operator, mechanic, heavy equipment operator and winemaker were some of his many talents he possessed and goals achieved.
Burl was a friend and mentor to many of the years and he will be sadly missed. He was a member of the Golden Nuggets Motorcycle Club of Southern CA, the VFW, Moose, American Legion, UMWA and NRA.
A Baptist by faith, he worshipped the Lord at Bethany Baptist Church in Hall.
Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home 216 N. Walnut St. Philippi on Monday, November 25, 2013 from 5-8 pm and on Tuesday, November 26 from 8 am-1 pm the service hour with Rev. Dr. Dan Unger officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery with military honours being accorded.
