Dewey Poe, Jr., age 86, a resident of Philippi, passed away Thursday April 1, 2021, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Dewey was born December 29, 1934 in Arden WV, a son of the late Issac Poe and Adyce (Streets) Poe. Dewey is survived by his wife of 61 years Beverly (Burner) Poe; three children, Ann Wright and husband Jim of Philippi, Amy Williams and husband Dan of Ravenswood, WV, Bill Poe and wife Kim of Hurricane, WV
Six grandchildren, Jamie Green and husband David of Philippi, Dr. Keith Hickman and wife Jenny of Williamstown, WV, Kyle Hickman and Mickayla Selembo of Blairsville, PA, Kenley Hickman and Skyler Varney of Ravenswood, WV, Emily Poe and Issac Poe both of Hurricane, WV
Brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Charles and Jacky Malcolm of Philippi
Dewey was preceded in death by brothers, Clarence Poe and Karl Poe, sisters, Pauline Mitchell and Betty Bussey. Dewey retired from Alderson Broaddus College in 1996, after 18 years of service, and prior to that he owned his own construction business building homes. He served in the US Army, and was stationed in Germany from 1957-59. Dewey was a very active member of Crim Memorial United Methodist Church. He loved farming cattle, riding horses, gardening, going to church, fixing things, and volunteering his any talents to anyone in need. Dewy truly lived a servants-life and will be missed by everyone who knew him.
Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home and Crematory 220 N. Walnut St. Philippi on Monday April 5, from 10am – 6 pm. Funeral services will be conducted at 6 pm with Pastor Sam Haught and military honors to follow. In honor of Dewey’s request cremation will follow the services on Monday. Due to the Governor’s Mandate face masks and social distancing will be required for everyone attending the services.
