Chris Lindley left a message on December 13, 2009:
Jan, It's been decades since we last spoke, and am so saddened to be re-connected through Doug's passing. You and Doug are both such a big part of my fondest memories from our high school years together. Doug had such a sunny disposition when I was around him, and was always proud to call him my friend--he truly was one of the good guys! I can tell through the various postings here that his life service to the Lord was faithful and that the impact he made on others lives profound. And for all who knew him, our lives are richer because of him, and his memory will leave smiles in our hearts forever. By faith, I also believe we will see him again, at that moment when there are no more sunsets, only dawning... My heartfelt and prayerful condolences to you and your family, Jan. Chris Lindley

Nancy McMahan left a message on December 12, 2009:
I have so many memories of the Hogans at Dalat. I taught Billy in third grade and his parents were always so encouraging to a new single teacher. One of my favorite memories is of Doug coming into our on-campus house and peeling a huge monitor lizard off the shower curtain. (It scared our student teacher silly!) He just took the thing by the tail and carried it out. Kids at Dalat loved Doug and talked about him for years after the Hogans left. He affected many lives for the Lord. Now he is with his Lord. I lost my mom and dad this year, so I know the only comfort is knowing they are with the One we serve. Love and prayers, Nancy

Thank you for giving to the Lord and shining his light. Let me know if there is anything me or my wife can do for you and your family. Love in Christ, Pete
Amy Tiessen left a message on December 9, 2009:
Jan, Ben, Billy, and Katie; I was shocked and saddened to hear of Doug's passing. Nothing I can write will make the pain any better, but you have been in my thoughts and prayers since I heard the news and I will especially pray for you through Wednesday. Doug taught me how to live life fully. He was passionate about God and about people. He never compromised his convictions for convenience, and inspired me to live for the Lord. He was more than a science teacher, a class sponsor, or a coach--he was an example. I can't imagine what his first morning in heaven was like, but I'll bet it was more than enough to elicit a "good night nurse" or something to that effect. I am praying that God will be your comfort in the midst of this inexplicable loss and pain. Love, Amy Tiessen (class of 1996)

He was a great, great man whom we always loved and respected for his devotion Christ, and his non-stop giving to others. Our years at Dalat were blessed by our memories of times with the Hogan family. No one else would venture out camping with us and a dorm full of junior high boys, only the Hogans! You all are an awesome family. Doug was truly an amazing man.

Jan, Ben, Billy and Katie—Even though there was not enough time for us to get to WV, hundreds of Dalat people are standing with you today. Everything about Doug’s life pointed to Christ and His power to change lives. He spent countless hours investing in people from early-morning prayer meetings to late-night conversations. His genuine passion and authentic joy enriched our lives. Thank you as a family for sharing him with so many of us who he has impacted. –Carl Frohman (Monterey, CA)

Jan and Family, Thank you for allowing us to spend so much time with your husband and father. The time was not wasted, it was invested. Our lives were enriched, both by his love and your generosity. Doug showed us that Godliness was not just talked about, it was lived out. And since he doesn't need glasses now, I'm putting the pair I put by the chair at youth night, away. :) We will miss his infectious laugh and his sassy comments. "YAHOO! Good night nurse! That's heehaw! Well frost my cookies! Sometimes you need somebody to get in your face and dance in your cocoa wheats!" These didn't start as WV phrases... but we think they're catching on... :) Need anything, let us know...
