Gary was a graduate of Philip Barbour High School class of 1965. Gary served in the US Army from 1967-1969. He retired from the Federal Bureau of Investigations. He attended the Boulder Church. Gary enjoyed golfing and was working at the Barbour Country Club. He liked to hunt, fish, and take side by side rides through the community. Gary also liked to participate in events at Lil Moe’s.

Gary is survived by his children, Traci Shaffer and companion Bart McCauley, Jason Shaffer and wife Constance; grandchildren Samantha, Hunter, Cody Mason, and Hudson Shaffer.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents John and Alda Shaffer; and son John Paul Shaffer.

In lieu of flowers the family asked that memorial contributions be made to the Barbour Country Club.

Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home and on-site Crematory 220 N Walnut St. Philippi on Friday December 27, from 5-8 pm and Saturday December 28, from 10 am- 12:30 pm. A graveside service will be held at 1 pm in the Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery with Pastor Sam Haught officiating. The presentation of the flag will be conducted by the WV Honor Guard.

Gary Wayne Shaffer, age 77, a resident of Boulder community passed away Wednesday December 25, 2024, at his residence. My sincere condolences to the family of Gary Shafer. Gary was a dear friend and co-worker who was hired with the FBI by his boss Roger Swanson when the FBI moved to WV. He was a great guy and will be missed by all that knew him! So sorry for your loss!

I worked for many, many years with Gary at the FBI CJIS Division from its early days in the Clarksburg Federal building Uptown, to the new building on Jerry Dove once constructed. So shocked to hear he has passed away. Condolences to his family on his loss.

I'm shocked to hear that Gary passed away. He was a good friend and neighbor who is going to be missed greatly.

Gary and I have been neighbors for such a long time and he never failed to tell me when he saw that he loved my place across the river from him. A while back he brought me the Simpson Store sign because I told him how much I liked stopping there at the store all those years ago and we shared a love of history. I was privileged to be shown his large collection of pictures for the Village of Boulder and the people that he grew up around. When I was going through chemotherapy, he would call and ask what he could do for me. He offered to mow my grass and get groceries for me, along with all my other wonderful neighbors in the community. I was so blessed to have him as a friend and I will miss him greatly. My condolences to his children and grandchildren...
