John H. Purkey, age 79, a resident of Philippi, passed away Wednesday April 16, 2025 in The Tygart Valley Health and Rehabilitation in Belington, WV. John was born June 5, 1945 in Philippi a son of John Dale and Jaunita Virginia (Lake) Purkey. John was united in marriage to Charlotte Newman.
John enjoyed fishing, hunting, and gardening. John served in the US Army.
John is survived by his wife Charlotte; children John Michael Purkey and wife Karen, Scott Purkey and wife Theresa, and Keith Purkey and wife Donna; six grandchildren; sister Patricia “Cookie” Townsend and companion Frank Bolyard; as well as several nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents John and Jaunita Purkey; brother Charles Purkey; sister Diana Godwin; and grandmother Ruby Lake.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Autumn Lake Healthcare, Tygart Valley Health and Rehabilitation, and Mountain Hospice for the care and compassion given to John.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday April 26, 2025 at 11 am at the Mt. Olive Cemetery with Rev. David Brown officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the US Army and American Legion Post # 96.
