Mary Katherine “Kathy” Young, age 63, a resident of Carrollton Rd. Volga, passed away Friday July 12, 2024 at her residence, surrounded by loved ones. Kathy was born February 14, 1961 in Baltimore, MD a daughter of Charles Dennis Gardner and Ona Mae (Miller) Myers. Kathy was united in marriage June 23, 2001 to John Thomas David Young JR.
Kathy worked several jobs in her life, including for her sister and brother-in-law as pizzeria manager, a school bus Aide for handicapped children, Barklays as a sales rep, ARA Vending as a vendor, and Safeway Grocery where she retired from the meat department as the union representative with 30 years of service. Kathy also held the title of Vice President / Trustee on the Executive Board for UFCW Local 27. After moving to West Virginia she worked at Winslow’s Custom Cuts as a meat wrapper.
Kathy enjoyed many things from beach trips, to bowling, basket weaving, playing bingo, canning, cooking, and baking, which she had hundreds of cookbooks that she would try different recipes from. Kathy was very crafty, and enjoyed gardening. Kathy loved being a mother to her children, and cherished the time she spent with her family and grandchildren. Kathy was very active in the 4-H program. Kathy volunteered and assisted in several activities, from working in the 4-H Food stand at the county fair to working with the youth at the 4-H horse camp. Kathy was recognized for her hard work and dedication to service as a recipient of the John Holsey Belt Buckle award and 4-H All Star.
Kathy is survived by her mother Ona Mae Myers of Goose Creek SC; her husband John Young JR; children Christopher “CJ” Young and wife Shelbi of Grafton, Jessica Young of Annapolis, MD, and John Young III; grandchildren David, Michael, Holden, and Remi; siblings Karen Greenburg and husband Nick, Denise Gregory and husband Jim, Charles Gardner Jr, and wife Maureen; step brother Steve Myers and wife Kathy; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home and on-site Crematory 220 N. Walnut St. Philippi on Friday July 19, from 5-8 pm and on Saturday July 20, from 10am- 12 pm. Funeral services will be conducted at 12 pm in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in the Hunt Memorial Cemetery.
