Paul R. Green, age 86, a resident of 104 Keyes Ave. and former resident of N. Walnut St. Philippi passed away Friday, August 6, 2010 in Mansfield Place of Broaddus Hospital. He was born on January 12, 1924 in Philippi, WV, a son of the late Jesse Waitman and Winnie Leah (Zinn) Green. He was united in marriage in Oakland, Maryland on October 22, 1949 to Jean (Williams) Green, who preceded him in death January 15, 1994.

Surviving are:

One Son, Paul Michael and wife Tiffani Michelle Green, Philippi

One Brother, Robert “Bobby” Green, Philippi

One grand-daughter, Kira Jo Green
One step grandson, Robbie Swanson
Two great-grandchildren, Kemper Ryan and Ashton Michael

Mr. Green was preceded in death by five sisters: Ruth Markley, Pearl Titchnell, Goldie Stewart, Gladys Cleavenger and Betty Sutton; and five Brothers: Kenneth Green, Dorsey Green, Karl Green, William Green and Ralph Green.

He worked as a milkman for Glenn Dairy, having 30 years of service. He was also self-employed as a painter for 25 years.

He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Pacific and was a member of American Legion Post #44.

He was a graduate of Philippi High School Class of 1942 and attended Presbyterian Church of Belington.

Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home 216 N. Walnut St. Philippi on Saturday, August 7, 2010 from 5-8 p.m. and on Sunday, August 8, 2010 8:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. the service hour with Rev. Joanne Glaser officiating. Interment will follow in the Belington Fraternal Cemetery with military honours being accorded.

I knew Paul and Jean very well. I worked with Jean for several years. I am deeply sorry for your loss.

Paul will be greatly missed in our little town. He always had a kind smile and a friendly word. I am unable to attend the funeral, so I’d like to share my story here - - it was a summer day in the early ‘80s – I was working at the Barbour Democrat and lived on North Walnut Street. One day I came home for lunch via the back alley and continued through the house to the front door to get the mail. I opened the door and could hear someone yelling “help, help”. From the front sidewalk I looked back and could see Paul at the Strader house next door – hanging by his fingers from the 2nd story eaves. He had been painting the trim and his ladder slipped and fell to the porch roof. I climbed the ladder from the ground to the porch roof and retrieved the ladder that had fallen and he climbed down safely. That night your Mom called and offered to give Paul to me – she said in the Orient, if you saved a life, that person then belonged to you.

Mike and Tiffani, I am so sorry for the passing of Paul. I went to church with him and he was the sweetest man. He was a devout Christian and cared about his fellow man. We know that he is in Heaven with no more pain, nor worries. I will pray for the family through all of this time of grief Janna

Mike, Sorry to hear of the death of your Dad. I knew Paul when I worked at the dairy in Elkins. I remember that he brought you with him and you entertained us by adding a column of numbers in your head at a very young age. Your Dad was very proud of you. Thinking of you at this difficult time.kxm

Mike...I'll always remember election nights at the court house when Paul and I would tally up the results as they came in. It sorta turned out to be a tradition with us for many years. I'll miss him!

I met Paul when he came to the dairy in Elkins where I worked in the late '50's to purchase milk for the dairy in Philippi. Mike, he brought you with him at times and I remember how proud he was of you then and now. He would call me occassionaly see how I was doing. It was such a pleasure to know Paul, I know he will be missed. Love and Prayers.
