Sylvia Jean Humphreys (Poe) fought a long battle with dementia and passed away just shy of her 82nd birthday. Sylvia was born on July 12, 1941, in Clemtown, WV, the daughter of Riley and Hazel Poe. On August 29, 1958, Sylvia married her soulmate, Russell Clifford Humphreys. They were married for almost 64 years at her passing.
Sylvia is survived by her daughter, Angela Lipinski of Hurricane, WV, and son Russell Kurt Humphreys (Robin) of Philippi, WV, as well as siblings Paul Mitchell, Wilma Keene (Bernard), Rhoda Johns, Wanetta Johns, Dottie Everson (Gary), Rita Kennedy, and Betty Poe. She is preceded in death by her parents, Riley & Hazel Poe, her sister and best friend, Pauline Moats, and her son-in-law Robert Lipinski.
The loves of her life were her seven grandchildren, who affectionately referred to her as Nana. She is survived by Dr. Christopher Lipinski of Orinda, CA, Lauren Langley (Alex) of Scott Depot, WV, Sarah Lipinski of Hurricane, WV, Kurtis Humphreys, Kobe Humphreys, Kaden Humphreys and Konnor Humphreys of Philippi, WV.
Mrs. Humphreys spent most of her career at Philippi Elementary as a school secretary, a role at which she excelled at. She loved keeping the school operating and nurturing relationships with both staff and students. Mrs. Humphreys worked tirelessly for the betterment of Philippi Elementary School. Mrs. Humphreys was a member of Southern Baptist Church of Philippi, WV.
Family and Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home and on-site Crematory, 220 N. Walnut Street, Philippi, WV, on Monday July 3, from 6-8 pm and on Tuesday July 4, from 1- 2 pm. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 pm with Pastor Jim Strawderman. Interment will follow at Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to Animal Friends of Barbour County, a group which Sylvia cared for deeply.
