William Elwood “Wood” Mitchell age 94 a resident of Rt. 3 Pleasant Creek Community, Philippi passed away Monday August 2, 2010 in Wallace B. Murphy Nursing Home in Grafton. He was born February 18, 1916 in Clemtown, Barbour Co. a son of the late Alva and Maude (Loar) Mitchell. He was united in marriage September 19, 1935 to Nela Pearl (Hathaway) Mitchell who preceded him in death January 26, 2002. Surviving are:
Two Daughters, Veta Louise and husband Robert Howdyshell, Webster Community
Etha Lucille and Ray Adams, St. George
One Son, Willard Mitchell, Pleasant Creek Community
12 Grandchildren, one adopted grandson, 24 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
Mr. Mitchell was preceded in death by one son, Elwood “Jack” Mitchell, Two sisters, and two brothers.
He was in the US Army during WWII, served in the European Theatre, and he was a recipient of the Purple Heart.
He was a member of the VFW at Clarksburg.
Mr. Mitchell was a lineman for Monongalia Power Company, later he worked for Clarksburg TV Cable and was a lifelong farmer.
He was Methodist by faith and was a member of Pleasant Creek United Methodist Church.
Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home 216 N. Walnut St. Philippi on Thursday, August 5, 2010 from 2-8:00 p.m. and Friday August 6, 2010 from 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. the service hour with Rev. Joyce Hawkins officiating. Interment will follow in the Clemtown Cemetery.
