Doris Jean Mundy

Doris Jean Mundy, age 90, of Philippi, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at her home.

She was born May 27, 1936, in Philippi, a daughter of the late Joseph “Joe” and Bonnie Ruth (Jones) Shockey. Doris was united in marriage on March 4, 1955, to Freddie Eugene Mundy, who preceded her in death in 1996.

Doris was a graduate of Fairmont State College, becoming the first person in her family to attend college. She was a dedicated member of her community and made history as the first female mayor of the City of Philippi. Doris also served on the Philippi City Council for many years, giving her time and energy to help make her community a better place.

While Doris accomplished many things throughout her life, her family was always most important to her. She cherished the time spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and took great pride in her family.

Doris enjoyed many simple pleasures in life, including tending to her flowers, watching birds, and painting. She also held a special place in her heart for her K-9 companion, Joey, who was a faithful friend and companion to her.

Doris is survived by her children, Jeanne Shoulders and husband Bradford of Philippi, Ronnie Mundy and wife Connie of Florida, and Robbie Mundy and wife Paula of Pennsylvania; ten grandchildren; three great-granddaughters; sister Linda Bartlett of Philippi; brother Perry Shockey and wife Sandy of Florida; and her beloved K-9 companion, Joey.

In addition to her parents and husband, Doris was preceded in death by her son, Joey Mundy; two grandchildren; and two sisters, Joann Cross and Rosemary Shockey.

A celebration of life will be held at Wright Funeral Home and on-site Crematory 220 N. Walnut St. Philippi on Saturday October 17, 2026 at 1:00 pm.  The family will welcome friends from 12:00 to 1:00 pm.  Doris will be laid to rest beside her loving husband in the Barbour Memorial Cemetery.
