W. Fred Wilson, 83, of Philippi, West Virginia, passed away at his residence on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

Born April 29, 1943, in Thornton, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Delbert R. Wilson and Ruby B. (Bolyard) Wilson. On October 6, 1963, he married the love of his life, Donna (Lantz) Wilson, who survives.

Fred was a well-known businessman and community member throughout Barbour County. He served as President of Builders Center, Incorporated from 1971 until 2000 and later was co-owner of The Used Car Company with his son from 1997 until 2022. He also served as a member of the Board of Directors of First Central Bank.

A true car enthusiast, Fred loved anything associated with automobiles and enjoyed attending car shows whenever possible. He also found great enjoyment in fishing and boating with family and friends. Known for his practical wisdom and strong work ethic, Fred proudly earned his “Diploma from the School of Hard Knocks” at the former Alderson Broaddus College

Fred was a faithful member of Philippi United Methodist Church, where he served on various committees and dedicated much of his time and talents to the church and its mission.

In addition to his loving wife of more than 62 years, he is survived by his son, William A. “Tony” Wilson and wife, Edie; granddaughter, Shelbi Young; grandson, Michael Winans and wife, Alisha; great-grandchildren, Ryker Winans and Tinley Winans; special friend and helper, Mary Miller; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Gale Wilson and Dorsey Dale Wilson.

The family ask in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to Philippi United Methodist Church 126 Wooley Hollow Rd. Philippi, WV 26416, or WV Caring PO Box 760 Arthurdale, WV 26250.

Family and friends will be received at Wright Funeral Home, 220 North Walnut Street, Philippi, on Thursday, June 25, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., and again on Friday, June 26, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Friday with Pastor Sam Haught officiating. Entombment will follow in the Bryan Memorial Mausoleum.

  5. We are so sorry for the passing of Fred. As a little girl, Donna and Fred were so special to me and always sponsored me through things when they owned Builders Center. He was such a wonderful man. My mom and dad always respected him so much. God got a real wonderful man. He will be missed.
