Ellen Maxine (Fry) Mitchell, age 95, a previous resident of South Main Street, passed away Thursday January 26, 2023 in Mansfield Place following an extended illness.
She was born in Moatsville on May 6, 1927, a daughter of the late Hugh M. and Myrtle (Shaffer) Fry. On January 11, 1947 in Oakland, Maryland she married Carl W. Mitchell, who preceded her in death on November 17, 1994.
Ellen is survived by a son, James “Jim” and Patsy Mitchell of Buckhannon; a daughter, Patricia “Pat” Johnson of Philippi; grandson, Brian and Kim Mitchell and children Kelli and Bradley of Tallmansville; step-grandson Kevin Perrine of Port Richey, Florida and Shane and Brigid Perrine and children Braden, Aili and Ciara of Plymouth, Michigan; a nephew and a niece.
In addition to her parents and loving husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn V. Gough; a brother, Harold Frey; a son-in-law, William “Bill” Johnson and his children Valerie Dawn and William Johnson, Jr.
She attended the schools of Barbour County, graduating from Kasson High School where she was a member of the basketball team.
She was a homemaker until her children were grown. She had worked at GC Murphy prior to her marriage and later in life worked at Smith Department Store and retired from Broaddus Hospital Housekeeping Department. She was a Methodist by faith and had attended Ebenezer, Mary’s Chapel and more recently Mansfield United Methodist Church.
She was a loving wife and mother; quiet, gentle soul who loved animals. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Animal Friends of Barbour County PO Box 452, Philippi, WV 26416.
Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home and Crematory 220 N. Walnut St. Philippi on Monday January 30, from 6-8 pm and on Tuesday January 31, from 8 am- 1 pm. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 pm with Pastor Tammy Shoup officiating. Interment will follow in the Mary’s Chapel Cemetery.
