James Allison Brockwell Jr. age 91, a resident of Mansfield Place of Broaddus Hospital and former resident of McDaniel Drive, Philippi, passed away Monday December 18, 2023 in the nursing facility. Jim was born August 7, 1932 in Newport News, VA a son of the late James Allison Brockwell, Sr. and Dorothy Daisy (Hollifield) Brockwell. Jim was united in marriage on July 6, 1960 to Ruth Elizabeth (Powell) Brockwell who preceded him in death June 29, 2012.
Jim’s career began as a former patternmaker at Newport News Shipyard, Newport News, VA and attended and graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Blacksburg VA, as a Mining Engineer. Moving to Ohio after college, he was employed by North American Coal, Powhatan Point, OH, then moving his family to WV, became employed by C & W Coal. Jim enjoyed playing cards and board games with the grandchildren and great grandchildren whom he dearly loved. He loved to go camping and was a self-taught locksmith at one time. Jim was a member of Philippi Lions Club where he served as past president. He was a busy person whether it was tending to the house, working in his building, or woodworking in the basement.
Surviving are daughters, Janet Grimes of Salem, Dorothy Jones and husband Greg of Philippi; grandchildren, Beth Norris, Greg Jones, and Matt Jones; several great grandchildren.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, James and Dorothy Brockwell; wife Ruth Brockwell; and sister Dorothy Brockwell.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held later at the convenience of the family.
