James “Butch“ Dickenson, age 76, a resident of Indian Fork Road, Philippi, was received by his Lord unexpectedly on May 26, 2023.
James, who everyone knew as “Butch”, was born March 3, 1947, in Philippi, WV, a son of the late Carl Willard Dickenson Sr. and Janice Lou (Anglin) Dickenson of Philippi.
Butch is survived by two siblings, brother, Carl Willard Dickenson Jr, of Philippi and sister, Barbara J. Blubaugh, of Philippi. Six children; Robby and wife, Becky Dickenson, of Philippi, Angie and husband, Obrey Zirkle, of Audra Community, Scott Dickenson, of Point Pleasant, Sam and wife, Melissa Dickenson, of Philippi, Michael and wife, Melody Dickenson, of Philippi, and Nikki and husband, Dave Nicholson, of Philippi, an especially close niece, Melissa and husband Allen Farley of Morgantown, as well as many loving nieces, nephews and relatives.
Butch was proud to be called Papaw by 13 grandchildren. Stephanie and husband, Justin Norris, Damian and wife, Jennifer Zirkle, Kaiti Dickenson, Michaela Dickenson, Avarie Seidenabel, Sierra and husband, Joseph Richards, Hailey Dickenson, Zachary Dickenson, Christian Dickenson, Alexis Dickenson, Abigail Dickenson, Brent Nicholson; six great-grandchildren, Darius, Hadley, Silas and Kermit Norris, Beau and Kye Zirkle.
Butch was preceded in death but is now reunited with his wife of 49 years, Shelia, and beloved grand-daughter, Olivia Paige Zirkle.
While Butch was a man known to stay close to home, he faithfully attended the Philippi Church of the Nazarene, on Sunday for many years. He was a man who cared deeply for people, wore his heart on his sleeve and was sure to show love and admiration every chance he was given. Butch was a Christian and a true representation of a Child of God.
Butch worked in the coal industry working for C&W Coal, and driving truck for Benson Trucking for several years eventually leading to his retirement from Weyerhaeuser. He was a dedicated farmer where he took pride in maintaining his farm and homestead. He will be greatly missed by all whose lives he’s touched over the years.
Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home and Crematory 220 N. Walnut St. Philippi on Monday June 19, from 6-8 pm and on Tuesday June 20, from 8am – 2 pm. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 pm with Rev. Michael Dickenson officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery.
