James W. “Jim” Posten, age 77 a resident of Philippi passed away Tuesday March 17, 2015 in Mansfield Place of Broaddus Hospital. He was born in Taylor County, WV on June 5, 1937 the son of the late W. Gerald “Red” and Winnie V. (Poling) Posten.
Jim graduated from Philippi High School in 1955 and then entered the US Navy. During his four year enlistment he was stationed in Illinois, Virginia, and Japan. After completing his enlistment
Jim returned home and attended Alderson Broaddus College. He received his B.A. in History.
Jim’s post-college career took him from Morgantown, WV to North Carolina, Virginia and back home to Philippi. From 1975 to 2013 he worked as a pharmaceutical and equipment representative for veterinarians. He looked traveling and working with his clients, forming some relationship that lasted his entire career.
Since returning to Philippi Jim attended Jerusalem United Methodist Church. He received training and became a lay speaker in the church. Serving as a lay speaker, singing, with the Precious Memories Quartet and helping with meals in the church were some of the things he enjoyed.
Jim’s family and friends will remember him best for his kind heart, his love of storytelling and singing, his hard-working nature and his love of good food, especially ice cream.
Jim is survived by his daughter Carolyn S. McRae and husband Chris, granddaughters, Madeline A. Workman and husband Corey and Georgia M. Layman, step granddaughter Reba Layman and great grandson James Bryce Farley and Corey Michael Workman, all of Charlottesville, VA, brother Gerald L. “Jerry’ Posten and wife Susan of Bellview, WA; son-in-law, Calvin Layman and best friend and caregiver, Betty Daugherty of Philippi.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Margaret A. Layman
Jim’s request for cremation will be honored.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday March 21, at the Jerusalem United Methodist Church at 2 pm with Rev. Tim Bleigh officiating. Family will receive friends from 1-2pm.
The flag presentation will follow the memorial service. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Jerusalem United Methodist Church 212 Briar Patch Rd. Philippi, WV 26416 or Mt. Hospice 1002 S. Crim Ave. Belington, WV 26250.
