Karen Sue Skidmore, age 74, a resident of Philippi, passed away Thursday March 7, 2024 in the United Hospital Center in Bridgeport. Karen was born October 27, 1949 in Washington, DC a daughter of the late John Brokaw and Barbara Jean (Wait) Porterfield. Karen was united in marriage to her husband of 53 ½ years Jim Skidmore.

Karen was a homemaker, a musician, and also an artist.

Karen is survived by her husband Jim; son Daniel Skidmore of Lufkin, TX; Kerry Skidmore of Henderson, NV; grandchildren Jackson, Isla, and Finley Skidmore; brother Jeffrey Porterfield and wife Annette of Crofton, MD; and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Karen’s Life will be held on April 27, 2024 at 2 pm at Burbick Hall on the former campus of Alderson-Broaddus University.

Sending prayers to you all. Karen was more than just my piano teacher growing up; she was a friend, mentor, and cheerleader. She was one of the most wonderful people I knew and has had such a huge impact on me and so many others. My sincere condolences during this time.

I have many fond memories of Karen. We only met a few times but instantly had a connection and kept in touch for many years. Sending love and condolences from Germany.

Jim, Dan and family, I pray God will comfort you and give you a peace that passes understanding. I have so many precious memories- one that comes to mind is the time Dan and Elijah set up a tent in our front yard. They were just 2 boys- having fun. God Bless, Sue

Karen leaves a legacy in the many areas in which she was accomplished and she was indefatigable when following her passions. Karen was a good friend for many years sharing adventures in art, dog training, teaching dance aerobics, gardening, church activities, arts & crafts jaunts and "recreational eating". She will be remembered by her students and the community for her love and mastery of music on piano, guitar, dulcimer, and harp. I feel honored to have known her and to have counted her as friend. Sending love to Jim, Dan and the entire family in the loss of Karen, a truly remarkable woman.

I'm so sad to hear of Karen's passing. I appreciated her beautiful musicianship and handy advice with cooking or baking. I pray you are comforted during this time. Blessings to yall.

I’m so sorry Jim and Danny for your loss. I know it’s hard and in time it will get easier. She will always be in your hearts. As neighbors we will miss seeing her out. If you ever need anything you know where we’re at. Prayers and Karen rest in peace.
